During the 1890s, Russian Physiologist Ivan Pavlov was studying the process which led dogs to salivate when presented with food. In his initials observations, he noticed that his dogs would began to salivate whenever he entered the room even when he was not bringing them food. At first, this seemed confusing, but it soon led him to other important enquiries.
He figured that dogs did not have to learn to salivate whenever they saw food. This response was wired into their systems and came naturally to them and to many other creatures. However, when Pavlov observed that any other object or event which the dogs learned to associate with food could trigger the same response, he knew he had stumbled upon a big scientific discovery.
He carried out a few rounds of experiment with a lab assistant or a bell. The dogs soon got used to seeing the assistant or hearing the bell before the food was brought in. Then they started salivating just at the sight or sound that reminded them of the food. Pavlov concluded that this must be a learned association and response. He called this process of learning 'Classical Conditioning' and suggested that this process could be used to study learning and behaviour among human and other animals.
