Stung by the menace of mosquitoes responsible for fatalities like dengue and malaria, helpless people in Jharkhand's Bokaro district, are offering prayers to the mosquito-god to ward off the dangerous bite and seek protection against the life-threatening mosquito-borne diseases.
A big mosquito statue was installed at Chas with much fan-fare on Sunday. A procession was taken out on Monday by devotees, who beat drums and chanted mantras to appese the winged hopin that they would be protected. A priest recited mantras in the presence of hundreds of people and the statue was also garlanded profusely and worshipped before the holy fire. People offered anjali and the devotees prayed and chanted hymns. "Hundreds of suspected dendgue case have been reported in the district. The health department is yet to wake up. We were left with no other option but to seek protection from the mosquito-god itself." Rajendra Mahato, a district resident, told the reporters. This unique appeasement of mosquitoes has drawn a lot of attention. The fan-fare with which residents of Bokaro have gone about praying to the mosquito-god may inspire others to play the appeasement game.
